Kahuna Kupuna Contest Update
Contest Entry Deadline August 2nd
July 28, 2008 via Roy Earnest, Organizer

Dear Friends of the Kahuna Kupuna,

The 9th Annual Kahuna Kupuna is rapidly approaching on Saturday, August 9th.  For those that have already sent in your entry form.  Thank you!  For those of you who are planning to enter but haven't gotten aroundtoit yet, there's still time.  The deadline is this Saturday, August 2nd but if it comes to me a few days late, no worries.  We'll accomodate beach entries the best we can but it REALLY helps us to plan the heats if we receive them at least a few days before the contest.

Here's the latest Kahuna Kupuna news:

*  Our caterer this year for the after contest dinner and awards at the Firehouse will be New Leaf Market from Half Moon Bay, a new "whole foods" and "organic food" style market that recently opened in HMB.

*  The music during the opening reception and part of the dinner will be provided by the Steve Teich Acoustic Jazz Trio.  Steve is a long time area surfer and an excellent saxophonist and musician.

*  Intergenerational Teams are currently forming.  If you're putting one together, please take on the role of "team captain" and make sure you get everybody's entry form in by this coming Saturday or asap thereafter.

*  If conditions allow, we're going to have a brand new division this year - the BODY SURFING division.  So, if you like to body surf and want to surf the contest peak without worrying about any board surfers dropping in on your head, then bring your fins to this year's contest.  We'll make a decision about whether or not to have a body surfing competition on the day of the contest based on conditions and the total number of entrants we have on that day.  This division will welcome surfers of all ages to participate until all slots are full.

*  We will also have a paddle board division.  Again, the division will welcome surfer of all ages to participate until all slots are full.

*  As of this date, we have 25 entries.  My goal every year is to have at least 60.  So, if you haven't sent in your entry, please do so this week, if possible.  Also, please talk the contest up with friends who you think might be on the fence in terms of entering as a contestant but . . . you think won't be better than you if they'll be in your division.  (Smile.)  At this point, the best outreach for this contest is through people like you.  So, please talk the KKC up with every surfer you know and get that coconut telegraph buzzing.

*  If money is tight for you right now and you are concerned about the $80.00 entry fee, just let me know and we'll work something out.  No worries.   One suggestion might be to ask a few friends to sponsor you.  In that way, you'll become a professional surfer for a day.  Think about it.  If they ask about where the money ifrom the contest is going, please point out that the net proceeds from the contest go towards keeping the beach and near coastal waters clean.   If they still have questions, give them my number - 650-438-6378 - and I'll be glad to talk to them.  Entry fee checks should be made payable to "Pacifica's Environmental Family" or "PEF".  They are our non-profit fiscal sponsor for this contest and enables all entry fees and other cash support to be treated as a charitable donation for tax reporting purposes.

*  For your convenience, I've attached an entry form, a description of the divisions and a peak at this year's t-shirt design.  Many thanks to Beth O'Rourke for coming up with this design.  I think it may be the nicest t-shirt so far . . . it's SWEET!!! . . . but then again, I say that every year.  You tell me what you think.

*  We still have room for additional sponsors as well as creative and "off-the-beaten-path" style raffle prize donations, although we're getting plenty of raffle prizes from the usual sources.  Use your imagination and , if you're comfortable asking people for donations, let it rip!  So, if you have any thoughts along either of those lines . . . don't be shy, call me!

*  Lastly: As always, we're hoping to line up judges in advance.  So, if you are willing to put in a minimum of one hour judging during the contest, please send me an email.
I'll have another update in a couple of days.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call me at 650-438-6378 or via email at agewaver@earthlink.net.

Stay stoked

Is it "Lindamar" or "Linda Mar?"
07/22/2008 7:03 PM

Is it spelled "Lindamar" or "Linda Mar?" I have just realized that there has been quite a bit of confusion as far as the Internet users looking for the term. Officially it is a two-word name, but something like 60% of the search population (i.e., more people) use the keyword "Lindamar" based on my recent research. If you are a surf shop owner or have other web sites related to the location, it may well be better for you to lean toward the single word version for your web site optimization strategy!
