Hi:

I'd love to hit the water (being a beginner, I mean that literally) at dawn for an hour or two before work in the next couple days. The only place I'm familiar with is Linda Mar, which apparently is awful at low tide - is that awful for everyone, or just for those who know what they're doing? Is there anywhere in San Mateo that does ok for a beginner on a 9' board at low tide?

Thanks-

Sandy

Sandy, well, you're correct, Linda Mar definitely is not the best place to surf on a low low tide. Tomorrow and the next couple mornings there are negative low tides around 6 Am or so...so it's not going to be great out there. But...for just going out and have fun, you can certainly still do that. Especially if you're just catching white water waves and riding them straight in. If you're doing that, it shouldn't matter...maybe hold off until 8 AM or so if possible to let the tide fill in a tiny bit and go make the most of it!

One thing the Stokemaster himself has always said that I think rings true is, as long as the conditions are safe for you, go out there and make the most of it! Even if the waves are terrible, you'll still be getting exercise and building up your paddling muscles.

For future reference, though, the ideal situation for most of the San Mateo breaks in my opinion is a medium tide or so.

I was just at LM today, the tide was low making for some major whitewater. I've had better luck when the tides were higher.

Thanks for the input! I'll give it a shot - could definitely use the paddling.

Oddly enough, my 'Guide to Surfing California' gives low tide as the best time for LM. Go figure :/

Sandy (and other following this post):

Super Low tide at Linda Mar is not very fun, and in the summer the consistent NW winds tend to make it not fun either. If my current condition display on the site is saying "20 knots from NW or WNW" that's starting to get iffy. But if it is around 20 knots then head down to the Jetty and you can at least escape some winds.

Personally, I will try to hit beginner SC breaks as often as posible, and I am sure others would agree too!

This morning would have been a nice morning for beginners to get out. For Linda Mar, I will look for less than 10 knots of winds in any direction, and swell size 3-4 ft from NW or NNW with 8-10 seconds period and medium tide. Low, especially negative tide is a No-No out there. You can look at the wind and swell priod information on the left hand column of my home page!

Is it "Lindamar" or "Linda Mar?"
07/22/2008 7:03 PM

Is it spelled "Lindamar" or "Linda Mar?" I have just realized that there has been quite a bit of confusion as far as the Internet users looking for the term. Officially it is a two-word name, but something like 60% of the search population (i.e., more people) use the keyword "Lindamar" based on my recent research. If you are a surf shop owner or have other web sites related to the location, it may well be better for you to lean toward the single word version for your web site optimization strategy!
