The Ron Stoner Show*
In 1965, Ron Stoner was the best surf photographer in the business. Every month, he shot the balmy beaches, bikini-clad girls, and achingly beautiful waves of Southern California for Surfer Magazine. Then, at the height of his fame, Ron Stoner walked off this sunny stage and disappeared forever. Mollusk Surf Shop Gallery presents "The Ron Stoner Show" an exhibition from the legendary lensmen's archives.
Stoner began his career with an enthusiasm, a product of the good fortune that surrounded him from his birth in Long Beach on November 20th 1944. Stoner started shooting photos in High School. His life at that point was all about Surfing and Photography. His career began by hustling his black and white images to hot shot surfers on orange county beaches. He opened his professional career in 1963 in Surfing Illustrated followed by Surf Guide and finally in 1965 he dove into the color world with seven shots in his first issue of Surfer Magazine. Stoner had now become a member of a very small group of the first most successful, professional surf photographers.
At the height of Ron Stoner's career he scored six Surfer covers in a row. The best surfers in California called Stoner around the clock to find out where he was shooting next. Ron Stoner didn't invent color surf photography, but he was the first real master of the craft. Stoner's images are more than just a beautiful wave or a perfect moment, he captured the effortless and innocent grace of coastal California—pre-condominium, overcrowded lineups and the over-commercialized world of surfing we know today. Stoner's work remains as gorgeous and vibrant as ever. A carefully selected group of Stoner's work from the archives of the height of his genius career will be on view at the Mollusk Surf Shop Gallery, Friday August 8th through Thursday September 4th 2008.
