Pacifica Surf Camp is great for kids. I'm guessing your son is already signed up for summer camps, and the summer is winding down, but that would be a good place to meet other parents and kids. They also do a surf camp during Spring Break.
My 8 year old has not shown more than a passing interest in surfing, but I have a feeling my 3 year old will, once she is old enough. There are plenty of kids who surf, though. Not sure if you like beach vacations, but you could also look into a family vacation to a place, like Hawaii, San Diego, etc. where your kid could get lessons and maybe you could take lessons, too. Did you say whether you were a surfer or not?
Even though I am excited about the future possibilty of surfing with my kids, as a surfer I also know how unpredictable and sometimes dangerous the ocean can be, so you are doing the right thing by learning about the sport and monitoring his progress. Once he gets out of the splashing in the white water stage make he wears a helmet!
I sometimes take my friend's 10 year old surfing with me, so I will try and post when I know in advance if he is coming to the beach with me. I also sometimes go in the water with him and wear my suit and some flippers and body surf -- since I'm not his mother I guess he's not embarrassed by that.
The best place to meet other surfers and surfing families might be at local contests, there are always tons of surfers and their families hanging around. Finding another surfing family with a kid the same age would be ideal.

If the levels are similar, maybe they could surf together one day despite the age difference? My son will be entering 4th grade in PA after the summer. Read More...

Ren, is the 10 year old child about the same level as my son? I'm still pushing my son into about 1/3 of the waves he catches, depending on whether or not he's getting frustrated. The last time we went to Cowells, he was missing the vast majority of the waves he paddled for.
I'm still wondering about the dynamics of young kids interacting together when they surf in the same location. I imagine that kids have more fun interacting with other kids, than with adults. I have an idealistic dream of seeing pods of young kids paddling around and catching waves together. I'm not sure if it is so realistic in Northern California because it is colder and more of a hassle just to hang out on the beach. It's quite a different experience in Hawaii to go to the beach with the family and hang out with other families.
I think that as my son gets older, he may be able to convert one or more of his school or neighborhood friends into taking up the sport. This might be easier than creating a new friendship with a kid his age that already surfs.
I actually enjoy going out with him right now. He still likes my company. I'm sure that this will change when he hits the teen years. The downside is that I'm not interacting with adults. Well, it's a fair tradeoff for me at this stage in my life. |

Yes I do end up pushing him into most waves, then he gets frustrated and gets his boogie board. I think that when kids are learning with each other they are more motivated then when they are with adults. Isaac also skateboards a lot, and hangs out at skateparks, and that is very appealing to him because it's a group of his peers.
Craig we are camping again this Columbus Day weekend at Manresa (with the family of the kid mentioned above). You and anyone else on stokemaster is welcome to come. I've gotten lucky the past 2 years with good surf on at least 2 of the days we were there.
I'll post more on the dates, campsites, etc., later. On Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 3:25 PM, <forum.sci@stokemaster.com> wrote:

Is this October 11 and 12th? I just went to the ReserveAmerica site and there are a lot of tent sites open. Did you already get your sites? I'm not sure which ones are good.
I'm taking the family to Yosemite this weekend.
When he gets back, he has skateboard camp at Berkeley. This is his 2nd year in the program. I think it's a good program.

We're considering the Element Skate Camp next year:
http://www.skatecamp.org/
We had him in the surf camp at surfer's beach near the HMB Jetty for the last few years, but decided not to enroll him in this year. He didn't seem to enjoy hanging out in the wetsuit for 4 or 5 hours a day. I guess I can understand that he'd want to take off the suit after 2 hours. I've been considering the Richard Schmidt surf camp in Santa Cruz for next year.
A surf camp in hawaii is another option. I haven't found a good one for kids. Conditions in Hawaii were surprisingly weak when I went a few weeks ago. |

Is it spelled "Lindamar" or "Linda Mar?"
I have just realized that there has been quite a bit of confusion as far as the Internet users looking for the term. Officially it is a two-word name, but something like 60% of the search population (i.e., more people) use the keyword "Lindamar" based on my recent research. If you are a surf shop owner or have other web sites related to the location, it may well be better for you to lean toward the single word version for your web site optimization strategy!
